There are countless of careers in the financial sector, from accounting to investment consultants. There are three major branches of finance, all of them incredibly large themselves. The first encompasses financial institutions, such as bank. The second focuses on corporate finances, or managing the money of large corporations. The third is investment banking. This can be both for individuals and companies.
In order to grow in the corporate sector as a financial manager you need to enter the corporation as a “number cruncher.” In order to work your way up you need to gain the trust of your employer and prove that you are a competent worker. Eventually you will move up, first managing small aspects of the company before moving onto risk management.
In order to be a financial officer in a corporation there are three major tasks you need to be capable of completing. First, you need to be able to anticipate fluctuations with money. As an officer you need to not only know how to deal with crises but also how to anticipate them occurring and offset fallout. You also need to be able to physical raise money for the company. Finally you need to help invest the money of the company wisely.
There are dozens of possible career paths as a financial officer in a large corporation. You can be a risk manager, a financial analyst, a credit manager or a public investment officer to just name a few.
If you do not want to work within the corporation itself, it is possible to be an investment banker. The responsibility of the investment banker is to advise a corporation on where to invest their money on a free-lance basis. You can either own your own firm specializing in investment banking or you can work for a preexisting firm. This is not only a faction of finance industry, but of consulting as well. You will not only manage the investments of the company but help advise on sales, trading and the general finances of the company. As an investment banker it is important that you help raise capitol for you client.
In order to pursue a financial industry career, regardless of the specific area, you need to complete extensive schooling. Though you can earn a variety of degrees and still remain a plausible candidate for such positions, it is generally advisable to have a degree in either finance or some higher-level math. It is also possible to earn a degree in specifically investments, which can be extremely helpful to the potential investment banker.
Though the schooling may seem like a financial burden at first, it will pay for yourself as it makes you a better candidate in the firm of your dreams. Once you have the education and degree to back it, you only need to establish yourself within a company in order to move up in the corporation, eventually reaching the position you have wanted all along.
